Interfaith of The Woodlands is an integral part of the Woodlands. Before opening the master-planned community, now known as The Woodlands, Mr. George Mitchell, founder and original developer of The Woodlands, envisioned a community that included a faith-based organization. In the early 1970s, Mr. Mitchell asked an Episcopal minister, to bring together religious leaders to plan for the spiritual needs for the community. His remarkable vision laid the groundwork for Interfaith of The Woodlands.

    Interfaith began in 1974, and Mr. Don Gebert became the first Executive Director. Throughout the years, Interfaith of the Woodlands' programs and services continued to develop in response to the voices of the community. The first building of Interfaith, constructed in 90 days, was built by selling Interfaith bonds valued at $375,000 "with nothing but faith to back them up".

    For 36 years, Interfaith's mission has continued to be based on Mr. Mitchell's vision and Interfaith's ongoing commitment to making a difference by serving our community. Today, Interfaith is an "incubator" for our community social services and congregations. Interfaith works with member congregations, corporations, local businesses, individuals, nonprofits and community organizations touching and making a difference in as many lives as possible. Interfaith helps individuals in crisis through financial assistance for rent, mortgage, utilities, gasoline, prescription drug assistance, emergency shelter, food, family and individual counseling, job training, senior programs and child care.
